Ryan Condal Extends HBO Overall Deal Through Season 4 Of ‘House Of The Dragon’ & Beyond

EXCLUSIVE: House of the Dragon is heading into its final chapter, and HBO has secured Ryan Condal‘s services to see it through. The Game of Thrones prequel’s co-creator, executive producer and showrunner has renewed his exclusive overall deal with the premium network through 2029.

Condal originally was signed into an overall deal by HBO in 2020, on the heels of House of the Dragon, which he had co-created with GoT author George R.R. Martin, receiving a straight-to-series order. It was the one out of half a dozen GoT prequels developed by HBO at the time to get a series pickup.

Condal served as co-showrunner on Season 1; he has been the sole showrunner since Season 2. House of the Dragon was renewed for Season 4 in November, ahead of the series’ upcoming Season 3 premiere on June 21. For the past several months, Condal has been shepherding post on Season 3 while working with writers on HoD‘s fourth and final season. Based on the show’s current pattern, Season 4 will likely premiere in late 2027 or early 2028, leaving time on Condal’s deal for him to develop and produce new projects for HBO.

The overall deal extension is another vote of confidence for Condal by the network.

“I’m thrilled with what Ryan has done, he’s been a great collaborator with us,” Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content, told Deadline in January about Condal’s work on HoD‘s three seasons to date, noting the series’ strong ratings and 87% Rotten Tomatoes score for the two seasons that have been released.

“This has been a very successful show for us,” he said.

The first two seasons of House of the Dragon place it as the most-watched current show on HBO Max. It launched in August 2022 as the most watched HBO series debut ever with 9.986 million viewers across linear and HBO Max on premiere night, won a Golden Globe for Best Drama Series and earned an Outstanding Drama Series Emmy nomination for its first season. Season 2 premiered in June 2024, drawing 1.2 billion total viewing minutes in its first week.

In addition to his work on HoD, Condais an executive producer on HBO’s second GoT prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which debuted in January.

Prior to coming to HBO, Condal co-created, executive produced and showran Colony for its three-season run on USA. On the feature side, he wrote Hercules starring Dwayne Johnson and co-wrote Rampage. Condal is repped by WME, Untitled Entertainment and McKuin/Frankel/Whitehead.
