SAG Awards Features Reunions Galore — From ‘New Girl’ & ‘Gossip Girl’ To ‘The X Files’

The SAG Awards, which was livestreaming tonight on Netflix from Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium, paid tribute to actor’s roots in everything from soap operas to commercials to Law & Order. It also spotlighted reunions galore, including for series New Girl, Gossip Girl, The X Files and The Good Place (a la Challengers), as well as Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

The fete kicked off with a surprise reunion between host Kristen Bell and The Good Place co-stars Ted Danson and William Jackson Harper, who paid homage to the steamy triumvirate in Luca Guadagnino’s tennis drama Challengers.

Later in the evening, Bell was spotted at the bar alongside former Forgetting Sarah Marshall co-star Jason Segel. The two paid a winking homage to the movie’s breakup scene, in which Segel gets dumped by Bell’s TV starlet character while fully nude. “It doesn’t really have the same effect with the towel over your pants,” Bell said as Segel recreated the moment, shimmying in a towel — this time with a suit on underneath.

Meanwhile, The X Files stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reunited onstage to present Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Drama Series, reigniting devoted fans’ passion for the chemistry between their on-screen characters Mulder and Scully. “Ensemble, I believe that’s a French word that means, ‘Thank God I only have to work three days a week,” Duchovny joked.

The two re-teamed to earn laughs about how they “still got it,” with Duchovny highlighting “timing” and Anderson pointing to “chemistry” as the prerequisite qualities for a great performance. “We did so good — we did that so well,” Anderson quipped.

Also reuniting onstage were New Girl alums Zooey Deschanel and Max Greenfield, gently teasing co-star Lamorne Morris for being too booked and busy to keep in touch with them following his Emmy win for Fargo. (Where’s Jake Johnson when you need him?)

Presenting the comedy ensemble accolade, Greenfield joked, “Share with each other your love, share with each other your gratitude and share with each other how much money you guys make per episode, plus any raises that were given after multiple seasons, that’s important.”

Beating itself to its own Gossip Girl reunion via Season 2 of Netflix’s Nobody Wants This, the streamer also united Bell with the one and only Blair Waldorf, Leighton Meester. In the hilarious bit, Bell put on her signature poison-laced voiceover from the HBO dramedy to narrate mundane scenes from the SAG Awards floor, to the bemusement of subjects Jeff Goldblum and Timothée Chalamet.

“Spotted at Table 8, Jeff Goldblum has a wicked appetite, and a peak behind the curtain reveals he likes his green eggs with ham. And look who it is, not so lonely boy, Timothée Chalamet, sitting next to a hot steak, medium-rare, au poivre with a side of broccoli — wait, what are you, Leighton, none of this is gossip, it’s just all about food,” Bell said.

Meester, who will join the second season of the rom-com series as a middle school nemesis of Bell’s character, apologized, leading her co-star to segue to what she lovingly called “Gossip Girl 2.0”: “The popes in Conclave were better at gossiping than us. I think we should pass the torch,” she said, to which Meester responded simply, “Amen.”
