Zoe Saldaña received the Spotlight Award, presented to her by Emilia Pérez director Jacques Audiard, which honors an actor whose talent and career personify an enduring commitment to excellence, including a special awareness of the role and importance of Costume Design.

While onstage accepting her award, Saldaña said, “Thank you to the Costume Designers Guild for choosing me for this honor. Certain actors have specific items that dictate their character, or they approach their character by having a clear idea of what they wear; that is not me. I think that is why I rely so heavily on the work that you all do.”

Saldaña continued, “I have always loved working with costume designers. I am a granddaughter and a great-granddaughter and a daughter of seamstresses. There’s no greater memory than seeing my great-grandmother, grandmother and my mother open up a bottle of champagne just to build a dress.”

Janele Monáe was awarded the Vanguard Spotlight Award, which celebrates a trailblazer who ignites the imaginations of cognoscenti and audiences alike. While onstage Monáe said, “To be recognized by the Costume Designers Guild is an extreme honor and especially meaningful to me because my costumes and my fashion are tied to my family. It’s tied to people that mean the world to me. I’m a child of working-class parents who I watched put on their costumes every single day – I call them uniforms as well.” Monáe further shared, “I love the laborers who spend the hours, days, weeks, months making the costumes for us – so I got to dedicate this award to you.”

Celebrities in attendance to present the Awards included  Kate Beckinsale, Quinta Brunson, Colman Domingo, Kathryn Hahn, Mindy Kaling, Justine Lupe, Connie Nielsen, Paul Tazewell, and John Waters.

The Costume Designers Guild also announced that the 27th CDGA will incorporate a meaningful new effort, dedicated to supporting those affected by the recent devastating wildfires in Los Angeles. The entire IATSE has launched a significant fundraising initiative to aid those communities affected by these unprecedented events, and the Costume Designers Guild Awards is committed to contributing to this effort. In support of the IATSE Emergency Relief Fund the CDGA is adding an online auction element, partnering with Propstore. The proceeds from this auction will go directly to the IATSE Emergency Relief Fund.
