CBS‘ Beyond the Gates triumphed at the 53rd annual Daytime Emmy Awards in its first year of eligibility, with big wins in the Outstanding Lead Actor and Emerging Actress categories Friday.
In all, Beyond the Gates won four Emmys at the ceremony that was streamed on YouTube. The sudser penned by Michele Val Jean debuted on CBS on February 24, 2025, which meant it missed the cutoff window for the 2025 awards.
But Gates, which is set in one of the most affluent Black counties in the United States, made up for lost time Friday as stars Tamara Tunie and Ambyr Michelle received first-time Daytime Emmys for their roles as Anita Dupree and Eva Thomas, respectively.
“This is the best welcome back to daytime ever,” said Tunie after accepting the Emmy. (She’s an alum of As the World Turns and Days of Our Lives). “There are a host of Black actresses who paved the way for me and I feel them as I stand here tonight, beginning with Cicely Tyson, the first Black woman to appear on the daytime TV show The Guiding Light.”

Beyond the Gates, the first daytime soap opera to feature a primarily Black cast since Generations in 1989, has been renewed through the 2027-28 season. The debut project is from CBS Studios/NAACP Venture.
