For Josh Charles, the time had come to add a little comedy to his life, so the opportunity to star in as well as be a producer (and next season executive producer) on Fox’s newest hit series Best Medicine is a career move right at the best time. The series is the Americanized version of the British hit Doc Martin, and Charles has the leading role in the show that is set in Maine and features one of the most delightfully eccentric ensembles on television. It was a hit right out of the box and is coming back for Season 2.
Charles joins me today on my Deadline video series Behind the Lens to talk about the reasons he took on the role, the added plus of having a say as a producer, and just what it is like working opposite one of the most irresistible dogs on television right now. Of course, playing a TV doctor can be a lot of fun too, especially one who is repulsed at the sight of blood (!).
Watch on Deadline
We talk about all this and much more including his career beginnings at age 15 in movies like Hairspray and the Oscar-winning Dead Poets Society, his recent reunion with co-star Ethan Hawke from that film on a Taylor Swift music video, why he has said “no” a lot to acting opportunities, the death scene in The Good Wife that fans still ask him about, a cult favorite with Wet Hot American Summer and lots more.
To watch our conversation and go “behind the lens” and in front of it with Josh Charles, watch the video above.
