‘Young Sherlock’ Renewed For Season 2 At Prime Video; Guy Ritchie Returns To Direct Opening Ep

Season 2 of Young Sherlock is afoot. We teased the greenlight was likely last month and now Prime Video has confirmed it is happening with an official Season 2 order. Guy Ritchie will return to direct the first episode of the upcoming season.

The Sherlock Holmes origin story has been a big hit for Prime Video, topping its charts in 95 countries and hitting the 45M viewer mark. It is one of Prime Video’s top 10 Originals ever.

Season 1 began telling the story of how Holmes, played by Hero Fiennes Tiffin, met James Moriarty, played by Dónal Finn. Far from the mortal enemies they are destined to become, the pair become friends and combine sleuthing skills to try and solve a globe-trotting mystery that unfolds over the eight episodes.

Zine Tseng (3 Body Problem), Joseph Fiennes (The Handmaid’s Tale), Natascha McElhone (Halo), Max Irons (Condor) and Colin Firth (The King’s Speech) also starred in Season 1. No casting news yet on Season 2 but we will be across that as it lands.

Guy Ritchie will also be an executive on Season 2. The series was created and exec produced by showrunner Matthew Parkhill. UK-based label Motive Pictures, which is backed by Fifth Season, produces the series with Amazon MGM Studios.

Young Sherlock has that rare magic—millions of fans around the world aren’t just watching a detective story, they’re falling in love with the origin of an icon,” said Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television, Amazon MGM Studios.

He added: “Guy Ritchie and Matthew Parkhill have cracked the code on making Sherlock’s early years feel fresh, dangerous, and utterly addictive, and have introduced a compelling take on James Moriarty that sets the stage for what’s to come. We can’t wait to see where they take him next in Season 2.”

Simon Maxwell, founder of Motive Pictures, previously told us of his hopes that Young Sherlock will ultimately run to several instalments.

“We know that in terms of the origin and coming-of-age story, we’ve just told the first stage. It is absolutely designed to be a multi-season show,” he told us.
