Spencer Matthews Embarks On Next World Record Challenge With Cameras Set To Follow Him

EXCLUSIVE: Finding Michael presenter Spencer Matthews has just come off the back of running 30 desert marathons in 30 days but he’s not done yet, and cameras will be rolling for his next challenge.

Matthews, who made his name on Made in Chelsea but in recent years has turned to endurance challenges, is next looking to break the Guinness World Record for completing ironman challenges in all seven continents.

His journey will be documented by UK indie Whisper for a doc series titled Seven in Seven [working title], which hasn’t yet found a buyer.

Only one person has achieved the ironman challenge in the past and it took him just under four years, whereas 36-year-old Matthews is looking to complete in that many weeks. Each triathlon will see Spencer complete a 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and a full 42.2km marathon – in each of the seven continents, finishing with the hardest one of them all, in Antarctica.

“This is without doubt ambitious – but what I have discovered is a love of pushing myself, and of achieving what would have previously been unachievable to me,” said Matthews, who now holds the Guinness World Record for successfully completing 30 marathons in 30 days on sand in the Jordanian desert.

Whisper EP Matt Wilkinson said: “This new challenge takes that endurance to another level and the seemingly impossible. Everyone was mesmerised by The Great Desert Challenge – and in doing this, Spencer will have everyone transfixed once again.”

Having found fame in Made in Chelsea, Matthews last year helmed high-end Disney+ doc Finding Michael, which was about the search for his brother Michael Matthews, who died on Mount Everest in 1999. Although its launch date was briefly delayed, the show was a critical success.

The development deal with Whisper is unique to the show and was packaged by Louisa McDonald at Money Talent Management. Whisper has been on a roll of late. Having expanded beyond sports production, it has landed Netflix doc series Saudi Pro League: Kick Off featuring Cristiano Ronaldo along with gameshow trio Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy and Pictionary, all for ITV.
