‘Lanterns’ Season Finale Sets Series’ New Audience Record With Over 10 Million Global Viewers

HBO’s Lanterns season finale attracted 10.5 million global viewers in its first three days, marking a new series-best.

The episode, which debuted on October 4, was up 13% globally compared to the series premiere in L3. It tallied 7.2 million viewers in the U.S. alone, per the latest data from Skydance-owned HBO.

Overall, the season is averaging 19.3 million global viewers and growing, maintaining its place among the top five HBO series launches in platform history. HBO says that viewership for the series premiere is now approaching 30 million.

This bodes well for its Season 2 renewal, which Deadline understands is pending.

Lanterns launched in August with 9.3 million global cross-platform viewers and 6.6 million in the U.S. in its first three days of availability on HBO and HBO Max. The company confirmed at the time that it outperformed the premieres of several tentpole series including IT: Welcome to Derry, The Penguin and True Detective: Night Country. Those went on to average 27.1M, 19.8M, and 17.5M global viewers, respectively, which already made a good case for the trajectory of Lanterns.

Lanterns is from co-creators Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King. The series follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery with cosmic ties as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.
