EXCLUSIVE: Vanessa Gonzalez has set a Hulu launch for her debut stand-up special, Vanessa Gonzalez: Mamona, which she’ll unveil September 15.
Raised by a devout Catholic mother and a witch grandmother, Gonzalez’s special brings an unfiltered look at growing up in a Texas border town and what it means to be called Mamona. She takes the viewer on a journey through her family’s chaos, cultural expectations, and the absurd courage it takes to stop pleasing everyone else and start chasing your own dreams.
Gonzalez is a comic who was named a Just For Laughs New Face in 2017 and “Best Stand Up Comic in Austin” by the Austin Chronicle in 2017, 2022 & 2023. On television, her credits include truTV’s Laff Mobb’s Laff Tracks, Comedy Central Stand-Up Presents, A Little Late with Lilly Singh and Jimmy Kimmel Live!. You can also currently catch her on Entre Nos: Spot On and Comedy Chingonas on HBO Max, This Joka on the Roku Channel and Verified Stand-Up on Netflix. As a writer, she was recently staffed on HBO Max’s My Adventures with Green Lantern and is currently developing a half-hour comedy with Hulu.
Gonzalez’s special, of which she’s exec producer, is directed by Symone Baptiste and comes to Hulu via distributor Comedy Dynamics. The comedian said, “I’m so thrilled and honored to have my first hour special featured on a major streamer like Hulu. This is such a dream come true and I hope this special reaches all the mamonas of the 956!”
