With Saturday Night Live back from its midseason hiatus, Bowen Yang is tuning in from the other side of the world.
Following his departure from the NBC sketch comedy series halfway through Season 51 in December, the 5x Emmy nominee admits it has been “bizarre, but ultimately fun” seeing the remainder of the season as an audience member.
“I was in Japan but I was watching,” he told People of the latest episodes. “I was getting texts from old coworkers, just saying hi and that the train was still running and a mutual missing of each other.
Yang said it “feels very strange” going from a cast member of seven seasons to a viewer. “I don’t want to believe that it’s totally bizarre to me, but it’s obviously an adjustment,” he said.

“To not know what the process is from soup to nuts with the whole week is alleviating,” explained Yang. “The emotional baggage of it has been lifted for me. So just watching the sketches every week these past three shows have been great.”
Following the surprise announcement of his midseason departure, Yang signed off from SNL with the Dec. 20 episode, which was hosted by Ariana Grande with musical guest Cher.
Joining the show as a writer with Season 44 in 2018, Yang was promoted to the cast the next year. In 2021, he became the first SNL featured player to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy.
