The 8th annual Critics’ Choice Association (CCA) Celebration of Black Cinema & Television honoured talent, recognizing standout achievements both on and off-screen within the Black entertainment community at the Fairmont Century Plaza, December 9th in Los Angeles.
Hosted by Jay Pharoah, guests at the event included Michael B. Jordan, Edwin Hodge, Ryan Destiny, Aiyana Lee, Wunmi Mosaku, Sinqua Walls, Ludwig Göransson, Delroy Lindo and many more.
Director Spike Lee commanded the stage as he accepted the prestigious Career Achievement Award in celebration of his body of work that has redefined contemporary cinema. Joining the ranks of legends, performer David Alan Grier was honored with the Vanguard Award for his decades-spanning career across comedy, stage, and screen.
Filmmaker Ryan Coogler earned the Director Award for his work on Warner Bros. Pictures’ feature, Sinners. Meanwhile, the power of non-fiction storytelling was recognized as Reginald Hudlin and Shola Lynch took home the Documentary Award for their revealing Apple TV project, Number One on the Call Sheet.
On the small screen, the comedy award went to Janelle James, who was bestowed the Comedy Award for her role in ABC’s critically beloved Abbott Elementary. Drama honors were equally competitive, with three-time Emmy winner Sterling K. Brown securing the Actor Award – Series for his performance in Hulu’s thriller Paradise, and Jurnee Smollett receiving the Actress Award – Series for her role in Apple TV’s Smoke.
The big screen celebrated performances with Tessa Thompson accepting the Actress Award – Film for her portrayal of the iconic feminist lead in Nia DaCosta’s Hedda. The ensemble cast of Warner Bros. Pictures’ action comedy One Battle After Another—including Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, and Chase Infiniti—was jointly recognized with the Ensemble Award. Further film honors saw Damson Idris receive the Supporting Actor Award – Film for his work in the record-breaking Apple Original film F1.
Finally, Skye P. Marshall was celebrated with the Supporting Actress Award – Series for her performance in CBS’s hit legal drama, Matlock. Notably, her award was accompanied by a special STARZ #TakeTheLead designation, underscoring the network’s commitment to championing narratives by, about, and for women and underrepresented audiences.
