Hulu Buys Netflix Spain Thriller Series ‘Innate

Hulu has landed U.S. rights to Innate, an upcoming psychological thriller from Fran Carballal (Cicatriz) and Enrique Lojo (En Fin) that Netflix’s Spanish arm commissioned. The series comes from ITV Studios-owned Plano a Plano, produced by Innato La Series AIE in association with Dynamic Television, which has distribution rights and struck the Hulu deal. It’s the latest example of an American streamer or network acquiring a European series in recent months, thawing out an icy patch where few programs made the transatlantic flight. The eight-part Innate is billed as a “gripping exploration of family, trauma and hidden truths.” It follows Sara (Elena Anaya), a psychologist who has left behind a traumatic past as the daughter of Félix Garay (Imanol Arias), a serial murdered once dubbed by the press as ‘the Diesel Killer.’ Her idyllic life with her husband Aitor (Roberto Álamo) and their teenage son Sebas (Teo Soler) begins to crumble when Félix is released from prison, coinciding with a new wave of crimes that eerily mirror the murders committed 25 years ago. Directors are Lino Escalera and Inma Torrente, with exec producers including César Benítez, Emilio Amaré, Álvaro Benítez, Daniel March and Carrie Stein. “With Hulu showcasing the world-class talent and gripping narrative of the series, we are confident Innate will resonate strongly with U.S. audiences,” said Stein, Dynamic’s President of Global Television.

ZDF & Blue Ant Explore ‘A Kingdom In Chaos

Germany’s ZDF and Canada’s Blue Ant Studios have teamed to ordered history doc A Kingdom in Chaos. One Tribe TV is making the show for ZDF-backed Franco-German channel Arte and Blue Ant, whose sales arm will shop it internationally. The show, which is being cut in one- and two-part formats, explores the rise and fall of Charles I, Oliver Cromwell’s bloody conquest of Ireland, the short-lived English republic and the dramatic return of Charles II. Against this backdrop, it’ll also look at the impact across Europe, from the witch trials of the 1640s to the stirrings of revolution in France. “A Kingdom in Chaos provides a brilliant insight into a pivotal moment of British history, as well as the development of political thought in Western European society,” said Peter Allenbacher, senior editor at ZDF/Arte. “In modern times, people cannot imagine what it meant to an ordinary 17th-century citizen to condemn to death – and decapitate – their god-appointed king.” Mimi Templar-Gay is the producer and director, with One Tribe’s Owen Gay the exec producer.
