Russell T. Davies & Pet Shop Boys Reviving ‘It’s A Sin’ For Contemporary Dance Show

It’s a Sin creator Russell T. Davies is reviving his hit Channel 4 and HBO drama with British synth pop duo Pet Shop Boys.

The group have teamed with dance studio Rambert and festival producer Glyn Fussell on a contemporary dance reimagining of It’s a Sin, which will debut in Manchester.

Davies is exec producing and the show is in early development. The team behind it described it as a “visceral theatrical experience – a reckoning and a celebration told through fearless movement.” Rambert will “transform this narrative into an immersive, living experience where contemporary dance, archive and cinematic visuals collide as past and present unfold side by side,” it added.

Starring the likes of Olly Alexander and Callum Scott Howells, and with title derived from the famous Pet Shop Boys song, 2021’s It’s a Sin depicted the lives of a group of gay men and their friends during the HIV/AIDS crisis in the UK. It broke out massively for both Channel 4 and HBO.

Davies said: “It’s A Sin was such a special show for me, and it’s one of the greatest honours of my life to have the show transformed by Rambert into something new and exciting.”

Pet Shop Boys added: “The original TV drama was a landmark series which compellingly presented the reality and tragedy of the Aids crisis to a mass audience. Our song “It’s a sin” was contemporary with the crisis and we are proud to be involved as this poignant and important story is interpreted in a different medium.”

The production will be choreographed and directed by Rambert’s Artistic Director Benoit Swan Pouffer, reuniting with Kaite O’Reilly to develop a new script for the stage. It’s A Sin will premiere at Aviva Studios, Manchester, as a co-production between Rambert and Factory International, with further co-producing partners across the UK and Europe.
