Roger Ewing Dies: ‘Gunsmoke’ Actor Was 83

Roger Ewing, the actor known for playing Thaddeus ‘Thad’ Greenwood in Gunsmoke, has died. He was 93.

The actor, who appeared as a regular on the CBS western series from 1965 to ’67, died on December 18 in Morro Bay, California, according to an online obituary. A cause of death was not disclosed.

Born Jan. 12, 1942 in Los Angeles, Ewing made his onscreen debut in the 1964 Joshua Logan-helmed Ensign Pulver, also appearing that year in episodes of Bewitched, The Baileys of Balboa and The Bing Crosby Show.

After appearing in a Season 10 episode of Gunsmoke, the producers were so impressed with Ewing’s performance, they wrote him the character of deputy marshal and handyman Thad, which he played for two seasons until 1967.

Ewing also appeared in episodes of Rawhide, The Mothers-In-Law and Death Valley Days, as well as the films None But the Brave (1965), Smith! (1969) and Play It As It Lays (1972).

Following his retirement from acting, Ewing pursued a career as a photographer.
