Looking ahead to its return in the new year, The Daily Show is bidding “Merry Christmas to all” and to President “Donald Trump, good night.” In a 10-minute-long compilation video, the satirical late-nighter trolled the GOP leader with clips of him snoozing at major public events.
Aptly set to “Silent Night,” the video opens with a festive, crackling fireplace, the center of which is not a hearth, bur rather Trump, shown nodding off at various occasions.
“Who the hell sleeps in front of the paparazzi, the media? How do you sleep in front of the media? And he’s out cold, you see the dribble coming down the side of his cheek. Who the hell wants to sleep with these people watching? I could never fall asleep under those circumstances. You’ll never see me sleeping in front of cameras,” Trump says in several voice overs, as the Yule log video ironically loops the POTUS’ previous quotes about former President Joe Biden, whom he deemed “Sleepy Joe.”
The Daily Show — and other late-night shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon — have made meals out of mocking Trump, who has repeatedly appeared to be dozing off in public, including at a prominent Cabinet meeting. “If you can sleep through that voice [RFK Jr.’s], then you are tired, you are fatigued,” Kimmel said. In response to the backlash and mockery, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told the New York Times that the president was “listening attentively and running the entire” early December meeting.
