Freida McFadden is a physician turned psychological thriller author who writes her books under the aforementioned pen name.
The writer is behind such page turners as The Housemaid, The Boyfriend, The Crash and many more. A trio of her books are so far in various stages of development for film adaptations, with The Housemaid having reached completion and soon to arrive in theaters Dec. 19.

‘The Housemaid’ – Lionsgate

‘The Tenant’ – Amazon MGM

Image Credit: Courtesy Deadline exclusively reported that Amazon MGM Studios’ United Artists and Scott Stuber won the rights to McFadden’s The Tenant shortly after it published in May 2025. The story centers Blake Porter, a marketing executive whose job loss sends his life spiraling and searching for ways to make payments on his brownstone. Thus, he takes in seemingly perfect tenant Whitney, but things take a turn from there. McFadden will executive produce, as she did on The Housemaid film. Casting has yet to begin.
UA’s Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt will produce the film adaptation along with Molly Sims of Something Happy Productions. SVP Olivia Heighten and Director of Development Annie McCreery, who brought the project in, will oversee for UA. Gaby McCormick will oversee the project on behalf of Something Happy Productions.

‘The Teacher’ – Apple Original Films

Image Credit: Michael Wan Waas Shortly before The Housemaid film’s arrival in theaters Christmas Day, Deadline broke the news of McFadden’s The Teacher heading to Apple Original Films sold in a pitch by Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg. McFadden’s book, published in February 2024, follows high school math teacher Eve, whose student Addie strikes a nerve after a previous incident with a teacher. Eve’s husband Nate is also a teacher, and his development of a bond with Addie leads to complications.
The duo will adapt the novel themselves. Brian Kavanaugh-Jones will produce for Range, with Cohen, Halberg and McFadden set to executive produce. Apple Studios will serve as the studio.

‘Dear Debbie’

Gina Girolamo (You, Pretty Little Liars) is attached as executive producer under her Strega Stories banner. The titular character Debbie, a wife, mother and advice columnist, seeks revenge when she experiences a series of injustices.

‘The Surrogate Mother’

Image Credit: Courtesy/Getty Images Sony has won the film adaptation rights to McFadden’s The Surrogate Mother, which centers Abby — a woman whose dream is to become a mother. After years of fallen-through adoptions and failed infertility treatments, Abby’s assistant Monica may have a solution for Abby, whose dream of motherhood is just out of reach. Anna Klassen will pen the screenplay, and Marc Evans is producing.
