OWN is giving an inside look into what many American families are going through during these harsh economic times with its new series, Maxxed Out.
The eight-episode series dives into the emotional and financial chaos and how money (and mismanaged money) can strain even the strongest relationships. Each episode uncovers the “What were you thinking?” moments behind financial disasters and the tough love it takes to turn things around.
Financial expert Leah Collins hosts the show, delivering straight talk, clear strategies, and yes, the receipts. Through high-stakes financial interventions, Leah helps people confront crushing debt and rebuild their relationships—with money, and with each other.

The first season of Maxxed Out will follow a married couple of ten years with two young daughters who struggle with crushing debt, conflicting financial views, and a cycle of poor money management. Daughters will be featured confronting their mother about spiraling debt ranging from $35,000 to $45,000, compounded by an inconsistent income and declining self-confidence, forcing six family members to share a small two-bedroom apartment.
Another family being featured in the series has two sisters running a family business, where one is $90,000 in debt, a breast cancer survivor forced to pay out-of-pocket for medical care, and stopping visits to her oncologist due to no health insurance.
“Maxxed Out isn’t just a show; it’s a mirror reflecting the financial pressures so many of us face and the ripple effect they have on our closest relationships,” said Drew Tappon, Head of OWN Unscripted Programming and Development. “We want viewers to feel seen and understood, while also walking away with practical tools to rewrite their financial story and reclaim their peace of mind.”
