‘9-1-1’ Season 9, Episode 2: First Look Photos At Angela Bassett’s Athena In Space

Last time 9-1-1 saw Angela Bassett’s Athena, she was getting blasted into space alongside Aisha Hind’s Hen.

In Episode 2 of Season 9, titled “Spiraling,” things are about to go haywire as their mission gets a little scary.

ABC’s logline for the episode says, “As a geostorm ravages Earth, Athena and Hen’s space mission teeters on the edge. On the ground, the 118 battles chaos when technology goes rogue.”

Hen was offered to go to space with a plus one after she helped save the life of tech billionaire Tripp Hauser, a character played by guest star Mark Consuelos. At the end of the Season 9 premiere, Hen decides to invite Athena on the mission.

The trip to space mimics the Blue Origin-sponsored all-women crew from earlier this year, in which Gayle King, Katy Perry, Lauren Sanchez, and others were blasted off into space for a 10-minute ride.

However, things in the 9-1-1 universe don’t go according to plan as their trip experiences a malfunction.

9-1-1 is a procedural drama created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear. The series originally premiered on Fox in 2018 and moved to ABC in 2024, starting with Season 7. The series explores the high-pressure experiences of first responders — including police officers, firefighters and dispatchers — who are thrust into the most frightening, shocking and heart-stopping situations. The show draws from real-life, high-pressure experiences of first responders who regularly face heart-stopping situations that are often unpredictable, intense and uplifting at the same time.

9-1-1 Season 9 continues Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
