EXCLUSIVE: Anti-war film Der Tiger is the first Amazon MGM Studios Germany feature to land a local theatrical release.
We can reveal the original Amazon film will release in select German CineStar cinemas on September 18 before becoming available on Prime Video later in the year.
The feature, set in the Eastern Front of World War II in 1943, follows a five-man crew of a German Tiger tank that’s sent on a secret mission far behind the contested front line. As they go deeper into enemy territories, they have to face their own fears and demons, and stimulated by Wehrmacht methamphetamine, their mission increasingly becomes a journey into the heart of darkness.
David Schütter, Laurence Rupp, Leonard Kunz, Sebastian Urzendowsky and Yoran Leicher star, with Tilman Strauß and André M. Hennicke among the supporting roles.

Pantaleon Films made the German pic in collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios Germany. Frank Kusche and Dan Maag are the producers. The screenplay was written by Dennis Gansel and Colin Teevan. Carlo Jelavic serves as Director of Photography, with Nick Palmer responsible for Production Design. Anke Winckler led on Costume Design and Hair and Make-up Design is by Meg Tanner.
“Der Tiger will be our first German Original that we’re bringing to the big screen,” said Philip Pratt, Head of German Originals, Amazon MGM Studios. “When Dennis Gansel and producer Frank Kusche first presented the idea to us, we immediately knew we had to make it.
“This special film deserves the biggest stage. Dennis is not only an award-winning director, but with films like Napola and The Wave, he has proven that he has a special sensitivity for this subject matter.”
Amazon MGM Studios has released several Hollywood films in Germany, with the most recent being the Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal thriller The Accountant 2.
“I am overjoyed that Der Tiger will see the light of the big screen,” added Gamsel. “This commitment to the quality of our film from Amazon MGM Studios and CineStar makes me, the entire cast, and crew very proud.:
“We are delighted to be exclusively showing Der Tiger in our theaters starting September 18 and are confident that the theatrical release will generate significant attention for this impressive film,” said Oliver Fock, Managing Director of CineStar.
