René Balcer Signs With Verve

EXCLUSIVE: Emmy-winning writer-producer René Balcer has signed with Verve for representation.

The Montréal, Canada native is known for his work as showrunner of Law & Order, which he ran for eight years of its initial 20-year run. During his tenure, L&O won the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series, secured a five-season network pickup; and tied Gunsmoke for longest-running series.

Balcer went on to create and showrun the spinoff Law & Order: Criminal Intent, which ran for ten seasons, as well as limited series Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders, which earned Edie Falco a Best Actress Emmy nomination, and CBS’ procedural FBI: Most Wanted.

Balcer is also active in the international space, having created the UK series Jo starring Jean Reno, as well as Bodyguards for TF1.

Additionally, Balcer wrote, co-directed and produced several documentaries, including 2017’s Above the Drowning Sea, narrated by Julianna Margulies and Tony Goldwyn, which told the epic story of thousands of Austrian Jews who escaped the Holocaust and found refuge in Shanghai.

Balcer currently has a series in development at Warner Bros. Television.

“As tough and zoom-y as this environment is, this is still a business of relationships, and no one does that better than the Verve team,” said Balcer.

Balcer is also represented by legal firm The Walerstein Group.
