EXCLUSIVE: Tim McGraw will no longer headline Netflix‘s upcoming rodeo series. The untitled drama’s pickup was unveiled at Netflix’s upfront presentation in May with McGraw attached to star and executive produce.
A source close to the actor-musician indicated that he needed to undergo back surgery which would require recovery time. McGraw is coming off an orthopedic surgery on both knees which he underwent in August due to an injury sustained on tour, resulting in him canceling the rest of his 2024 concert dates.
McGraw’s role on the Netflix series is physically demanding –set in the fierce, competitive world of bull riding, the drama follows a megastar champion (McGraw) facing a life-or-death crossroads when confronted by the arrival of a fearless young rider whose very existence challenges his ways and unearths secrets that force him to reckon with his past.

In light of the pending new orthopedic surgery, McGraw is stepping back from the role, which allows the project to move forward, with the part recast.
The future of the series, which comes from Skydance Television and McGraw’s Skydance-backed Down Home, is unclear, with recasting rumored. Reps for Netflix and Skydance declined comment.
The bull riding drama is created and written by Brandon Camp, who was set to serve as co-showrunner alongside Taylor Elmore.
On screen, country star McGraw was most recently seen on Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone and prequel 1883.
